Seasonal Ayurveda: How to Align with Spring for Balance & Renewal

In Ayurveda, aligning with nature’s rhythms is essential for sustained well-being. As the earth wakes up from winter’s stillness, we’re invited to shake off heaviness and step into a season of lightness, clarity, and renewal.

🌱 Why Cleanse in Spring?

Ayurveda teaches us to live in harmony with the seasons—a practice called Ritucharya. Weather and season changes affect our bodies deeply, and staying in doshic balance in transtion between seasons helps prevent disease. Early Spring is Kapha season. As the warmth returns, winter’s accumulated moisture begins to melt—just like the snow and ice in nature, the Kapha in our bodies starts to liquefy and move.

This can cause sluggishness, allergies, sinus congestion, and digestive issues—especially for those with Kapha predominance. On top of that, after winter’s heavier and more oily diet and limited movement, the liver becomes overworked and circulation doesn't function as it should be. This is the perfect time to reset through a gentle cleanse and a lighter, more energising routine.

🌿 Spring Reset Tips for All Doshas

Morning Ritual

Start your day with a glass of warm water mixed with a teaspoon of raw honey (never heated!). This simple practice helps scrape off excess Kapha, stimulates digestion, and gently detoxes the system. (Starting your day by sipping warm water can continue throughout the entire year with additions depending on your predominant dosha)

Eat Light & Bitter

Favor bitter, pungent, and astringent tastes. Don't worry if you are not familiar to Ayurvedic tastes concept. Think leafy greens (nettle, dandelion, spinach), all legumes, artichokes, radishes, and light broths. These support liver detox and Kapha reduction. Avoid sweet, sour, and salty foods, dairy (especially in the morning), ice cream and cold drinks.

Spice Smartly

Use herbs like ginger, turmeric, black pepper, and pippali, or sip a warming tea made from cumin, coriander, and fennel equal proportions or dandelion, nettle or ginger tea after meals. If you’re Pitta-predominant, be mindful not to overheat with too many spices.

Move to Circulate Energy

Kapha’s heaviness can lead to lethargy, so it’s key to get moving. Energising yoga like sun salutations, camel, boat, lion and fish poses, along with kapalabhati breath, invigorate the body and mind.

Dry Brushing & Warm Oils

Before showering, gently dry brush your skin to stimulate lymphatic flow and circulation. (Be gentle especially if you are Vata or Pitta.) Then, nourish your tissues with warm sesame or sunflower oil—especially helpful in removing toxins and grounding your energy. If you feel your skin is already oily skip the oiling part stick to dry brushing only.

Create Mental Space

As the season of clarity, spring invites us to refresh not only our bodies but also our minds and environments. Clean your space, your inbox, or your to-do list. Journal. Set intentions with the new moon. Ask: What am I ready to release? What new energy do I welcome in?

✨ My Personal Spring Wisdom

Even though I’m predominantly Pitta dosha, I often feel Kapha imbalances during the transition from spring to summer—like sluggishness, tiredness, and mild allergy symptoms. Adapting to Ritucharya helped tremendously: I started moving more (thanks to my dog :)), eating lighter, choosing detoxifying herbs/spices in balance, drinking warm honey water, celery juice in the morning in the morning, dry brushing & oiling, and for the peace of mind asking myself whether my choices come from ego or heart. The result? Less allergy, more vitality, and a deeper connection to my natural rhythm.

Breath of Fire (Agni Pran / Kapalabhati)

Breath of Fire is considered one of the most powerful and purifying pranayamas. It’s a rhythmic,  continuous breathing through the nose, with equal emphasis on the inhale and exhale, powered by a gentle pumping of the navel point.

Especially in spring, when the Kapha energy (earth and water) can cause sluggishness, allergies, and stagnation, practicing Breath of Fire helps awaken and energise the body. It stimulates digestion, clears toxins from the lungs and blood, strengthens the nervous system, and awakens the inner fire (Agni) necessary for transformation and renewal.

Just a few minutes each morning can clear away lethargy, boost your vitality, and help align your energy with the vibrant rebirth of the season.

Always begin slowly if you’re new to Breath of Fire, and avoid it if pregnant or on your first days of menstruation.

How to Practice Breath of Fire in Kundalini Yoga:

  • Sit comfortably with a straight spine, shoulders relaxed.

  • Slightly tuck the chin down (neck lock / Jalandhara Bandh).

  • Begin by inhaling and exhaling rapidly through the nose.

  • Focus on pumping the navel point (belly button) inward toward the spine with each exhale; the inhale comes naturally.

  • Keep the rhythm steady and even — like the gentle pumping of a bellows.

  • Breathe powerfully but without strain; your chest stays relaxed.

  • Start slowly if you are new — 1 minute is a good start — and gradually increase up to 3 minutes or longer with practice.

    Important tips:

  • Always breathe through the nose unless otherwise instructed.

  • Keep the breath rhythmic, continuous, and light.

  • If you feel dizzy, pause and return to normal breathing. SAT NAM
